Guarded optimism is my stance right now.  We will see a new collection of faces with this edition of Hawks (players and coaches) with more to come in time.  Health may be the biggest key going into this new season as the article stated.  There isn't a whole lot of depth anywhere and there have been a number of significant personnel losses (Hossa, Hjalmarsson, Panarin, Darling and Kruger to name a few).  Saad was brought back and that is real positive.  Not a whole lot else to right home about just yet so time will tell if the younger guys can take the next step forward and that the new guys can adjust accordingly.  Toews can use a healthy bounce back season for sure.  Crawford will perhaps have a chip on his shoulder by the NHLN snub in goalie rankings.  Kane will be Kane so no worries there.  Still could use help at center and secondary scoring as well as a second pairing dman and overall help on the back end.  I think Samuelsson is a real good hiring and fit.  Other teams, especially in the Central, have upgraded their rosters so it will be a dogfight all season.  Should be a fun year!

The only thing I'm worried about is Crow getting injured, plus the core guys of course, but they don't have anyone who's proven in the NHL behind Crow. I like that Stan restocked the pipeline with a few young goalies and I have high hopes for Forsberg, mostly because of what he did in 2016 in the AHL and I like his name, if Crow stays healthy and Forsberg gets 20+gms in it'll be a good year.

Besides the Hoss situation, and losing Hjalmarsson instead of Seabs, I really like the turnover this year, especially getting big Saad back and Sharpie.

Plus Ulf over Kitchen will really help the D, never like Kitchen as a player or coach. Never liked Ulf as a player as well but would've loved him on our team. I'm not worried about the D, Forsling and Kempny know what to expect now, Rutta is a big mobile guy who isn't a kid, and Murphy is a big guy with really good bloodlines.

Schmaltz just might be the 3C we're looking for, if he improved at faceoffs, the kid can play a strong 2way game and has good hands, if he's a winger the Hawks have options at 3C and 4C, despite what most people think. Hayden is a natural center, then there's Kero, Dauphin, Kampf, and if they have strong camps, Knott and Radke.

So overall I'm very positive about this year.

Whenever I see an article like that, it gets the "Thanks Captain Obvious!" stamp of weak journalism.  Thankfully there is much better commentary and insight on this forum, like above.

well....seeing as this message board hasn't exactly been a beehive of activity lately, i thought i'd put it up as a discussion point even if it's not quite pulitzer material.

pickings are slim this time of year if you hadn't noticed.  :)

My only fear is that the Hawks become stale, and other teams pass them by. Winterpeg is a team that can really surprise. They got some serious firepower, and they may just take the next step. I personally don't buy into Nashville, sorry folks, but that team is just like the 91/92 Hawks. They just don't have the star power to do it again. I think Dallas will still have a lot of their problems, Bishop gets injured. Minny will be fighting for the basement of the Central. And I think it comes down to Chicago, Winterpeg and St.Louis for the Central. Notice I didn't even mention the Avs, we can figure out why. In the West, look out for the Oilers, this is their year I feel. Calgary will be another team that will put it all together. SJ will take a minor step back, LA will tinker with a playoff spot, and the Ducks will remain colossal under achievers. Now, if our Hawks wish to make some noise, we need these kids to start producing right out of the gate, if they don't, I see them all traded this year. Hartman and Schmaltz could help land a nice piece and utilize Hossas cap space. I think the leash is shorter now, just like our window!!!

Yep, no knock on you.  This forum is definitely a bit sleepy.  Seems like 5-10 posters are responsible for 90% of the traffic. I just look at articles like that and think I guess anyone can be a sports journalist.

well...it took some doing but i had to pull the reins back and stop myself from reposting the "toews gets a crack in his windshield" and "jim cornelison has an ingrown toenail" stories.

I think we make the playoffs for sure. How far we get depends on which team shows up to play.

I'm not as concerned about our defensive corps as much as I'm concerned about the commitment of the forward to play both ends of the ice.

I think Crow has a great, underappreciated-by-many season, similar to the last two and hopefully without any injury.

I don't think that Seabrook and Keith will ever be what they were; and that they will be much less productive, both offensively and defensively, than they were.  Crawford will be good again.  It will be interesting to see if Toews can experience a revival with Saad around.  He will have no more excuses as he tries to regain some excellence.  Will he?  I have no idea.  Kane should have another decent season.  As for the team as a whole, I guess it could go either way, but I think they will have a hard time with a weakened defense, unless i am completely wrong about Seabrook and Keith.

That was one of the dumbest things I've read, Saad as the 3C? Yeah right, and he called Kruger a faceoff specialist, this moron should check the stats, Kruger only had 2 seasons were he was 50% at the draw.

Training camp can't start soon enough.

This is the season for eternal optimism.  We will win cup # four.  Toews will display his speed and offensive side.  Saad Toews Panik will be one of the best lines in the entire league feared by all Debrincat will play the entire season as the 2lw and will win the Calder.  Wingels Hayden and Bouma will form a dominating fourth line scoring 30++ goals and a third line of Sharp Kero and Hartman will be no easy mark.  The defense will be much better than last year because of balanced L - R pairings.  We also have a new Minister of Defense with an abrasive attitude. Opposing teams will no longer be comfortable in our zone; they will be on pins and needles looking over their shoulder.  This team will return to its signature up-tempo puck possession game which we have somehow gotten away from.  Old dog Q will learn a new trick.  Instead of going into defensive mode after a 2 goal lead his new mantra will be “one more goal “

You could say that 😁 why would he even consider Saad as a center? Hes always been a LWer and when forced to take a faceoff he's only 42%.

So, they are going to go from being swept by the Preds in a "not even close" series, to winning it all?  I guess you think the Preds got worse over the offseason.  With Subban, Josi, Ellis and Ekholm on the back end, it does not look that way to me.
